Select **Add app** to install the Theme Creator.
Chrome will automatically open the apps tab. Select **Theme Creator**.
Give your new theme a name in the field at the top-left of the page.
Select **Upload an image** and choose a high-resolution image to base your theme around.

[Unsplash](<https://unsplash.com/>) is a website where you can find tons of great images completely free of charge. [Vector](<https://www.lifewire.com/vector-and-bitmap-images-1701238>) patterns tend to work best.
After you upload, you'll see a preview on the right side of your screen. Use the controls below the image to make adjustments, including position, size, and repetition.
Select **Generate Colors** to create a color scheme for your theme based on the image you just uploaded. The website will automatically update your preview to show you the colors it detected from the image you uploaded.
If you'd like to alter any of the colors, select the **Colors** tab. Under this tab, you can select any of the colors for your [browser](<https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-a-browser-446234>) window and change them as you like.
Switch back to the **Basic** tab and select **Pack and Install** to package your new theme as an extension for Chrome.
Go to **chrome://extensions/** in the Chrome browser and select the **Developer Mode** toggle switch in the top-right corner to enable it.
Locate the [CRX file](<https://www.lifewire.com/crx-file-2620391>) you just downloaded on your computer, then drag-and-drop it into the browser window.
Select **Add theme** in the pop-up window.

If you see a "cannot decode image" error message, try using a different image for your custom theme.
Chrome will take a few seconds to apply your theme. If you want to revert back to the default, select **Undo**.
